Gentex has identified a performance variance affecting certain NFMI earplugs when used as stand-alone hearing protection. Testing indicates that affected earplugs provide approximately lower attenuation when used on their own. When used as part of a dual hearing protection system with the AMP Communication Headset, performance meets specified attenuation requirements.

Description of the Issue

Quality and performance testing identified that certain NFMI earplugs may provide lower attenuation at lower sound frequencies when used as stand-alone hearing protection than originally specified. This variance does not affect performance when the earplugs are used in combination with the AMP Communication Headset, which is the intended configuration.

Affected Products

This advisory applies to NFMI earplugs manufactured and sold during 2024–2025, including:

• NFMI Earplugs: N100880-XX
• CASL Kits: 1000723-XX-YYZZ
• WCEP Kits: N100888-XX

Technical Information

Testing indicates that some affected NFMI earplugs achieve approximately 25 dB attenuation at certain lower sound frequencies when used as stand-alone hearing protection, compared to the originally specified 30 dB.

When NFMI earplugs are used in conjunction with the AMP Communication Headset in a dual hearing protection configuration, system-level attenuation meets validated performance requirements.

The identified variance is currently under review and corrective actions are in progress.

• Use with AMP Communication Headset:
  No impact. System-level performance meets specified attenuation requirements.
• Stand-Alone Use:
  Affected NFMI earplugs provide hearing protection at approximately 25 dB attenuation. Users should assess whether this level of attenuation is appropriate for their specific environment and protection requirements.

Product Labeling

Product labeling reflects validated attenuation values for each intended configuration. Labeling for NFMI earplugs has been updated to align with verified stand-alone performance. Current shipments display CE attenuation values applicable to intended system use.

Corrective Actions

Gentex has initiated actions including:

• Design refinement under review
• Additional testing to validate corrective measures
• Continued production with updated labeling
