New aircrew helmet for the French DGA

Helmet Integrated Systems Ltd is to commence delivery of a new lightweight aircrew helmet developed for the French DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement) to be used throughout the rotary and non-ejection fixed wing fleet of the three French services:

  • ALAT (Aviation Légère de l’Armée de Terre)
  • AA (Armée de l’Air)
  • AN (Aéro Navale)

The aircrew helmet incorporates a number of new features associated with the varied operational needs of all three services throughout the world.

Crash protection was a key feature in the design of the helmet, the materials used, and particular attention was given to the need to meet stringent flame engulfment trials, at temperatures of 800°C

This lightweight aircrew helmet (<1.7kg) which incorporates a lower face guard, lip light and dual clear/tinted visor with cover, includes provision for the mounting and powering of a range of night vision goggles.

Oxygen masks can be fitted for high altitude operations, and the helmet is compatible with nuclear bacteriological chemical (NBC) masks
A quantity of helmets are fitted with active noise reduction headsets (ANR), and a microphone parasite noise reduction system is a feature of helmets used by winch men and side gunners

Rob Crick, Project Director commented:

Achieving qualification of this helmet with the French government to a very demanding spec is a fantastic achievement. We’ve had many technical challenges along the way, but thanks to our high calibre R&D team and our very close relationship with our customer, we have overcome every single difficulty. As a result we have a helmet which can be integrated into 28 aircraft types, ranging from the Alouette 3 and Transall to NH90 and A400M
